The route, day by day
Day 1: Arrive in Muscat
The airport is about 30 minutes from Mutrah. Add a Muscat airport transfer to the same quote. Walk Mutrah Corniche if you land before 9 PM.
Day 2: Muscat
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the morning, then photo stops at Al Alam Palace and the forts of Mirani and Jalali. Mutrah Souq is at its best in the evening.
Day 3: Wadi Shab and the coast
Leave Muscat at 7 AM. The Bimmah Sinkhole is about 90 minutes away, and Wadi Shab is 30 km further. Plan 4 to 5 hours in the wadi, including a short boat crossing. See the Wadi Shab trip.
Day 4: Nizwa
Nizwa is 165 km from Muscat, about 90 minutes by road. Stop at the date-palm oasis of Birkat Al Mouz on the way. Visit Nizwa Fort and the souq, and in the afternoon Bahla Fort or Jabreen Castle. On Fridays the livestock market runs from about 7 to 11 AM, so leave Muscat by 5:30 AM. Details in our Nizwa day trip guide.
Day 5: Jebel Akhdar
The mountain is 45 km from Nizwa. A police checkpoint turns back standard cars, so a 4WD is required. Temperatures are typically 8 to 12°C cooler than Nizwa. Stop at Diana's Point and walk the Three Village Hike, about 2.5 km one way. Stay the night on the mountain.
Day 6: Wahiba Sands
About three hours from Jebel Akhdar with a stop in Nizwa. Arrive early afternoon, watch the sunset from the dunes, and sleep in a desert camp. More in our Wahiba Sands tour guide.
Day 7: Sunrise and return
Leave camp around 8 AM. Muscat is about three hours away, and the airport is 40 minutes from Mutrah.

Best time for an Oman tour package
October to April is the most comfortable window, with daytime highs around 22 to 30°C in Muscat. February is the most comfortable month across all five stops. March and April add the rose season on Jebel Akhdar. From June to September the interior passes 40°C, so outdoor stops move to early morning. Salalah turns green and misty during the khareef monsoon from July to September.
