Nizwa was the seat of Oman's Imams for centuries and its 17th-century fort — with the largest circular tower in the Arab world — remains the most complete expression of Omani military architecture anywhere. Then the road climbs to Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountain, at 2,000 metres — rose farms, walnut orchards, and canyon viewpoints that drop 1,000 metres to the valley floor.
