Muscat Oman day trips — what fits in one day

Wadi Shab — about 150 km south

The trail at Wadi Shab follows a falaj through palms, then the walls close in and the path becomes a chain of pools. The last pool means swimming under an overhang into a chamber in the rock. That swim is why this day is unlike a fort or a viewpoint. Leave Muscat by 7:30 AM. Nizwa Fort and souq — about 165 km inland

Nizwa Fort dates from the 17th century. Its round tower is the largest fort tower in Oman. The Friday livestock market in the souq next door runs through the morning — goats and cattle in the same square this trade has used for generations. The silver lanes sell khanjars and frankincense, and the prices are negotiated. Leave by 6 AM if Friday’s market is the reason for the day. Any other morning, 8 AM is enough for the fort alone. Jebel Akhdar — about 200 km inland

Jebel Akhdar is the Green Mountain. A police checkpoint on the climb requires a 4WD, and that rule is enforced. The plateau is about 15°C cooler than the Muscat coast. Rose gardens, terraces and canyon views are the day. Pairing it with Nizwa is a long inland day, not two relaxed stops; read the Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar combination before you book both for one date. Wahiba Sands — about 220 km southeast

Wahiba is red dunes, a Bedouin camp, and a dark sky. It works better as a night in the dunes than as a same-day return. Late light on the sand, and the desert after dark, are the reason people go. Sur and the eastern coast — about 360 km southeast

Give Muscat a day before you leave it. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors Saturday to Thursday, 8:00–11:00 AM. The prayer-hall carpet was woven by hundreds of Omani women over four years. Old Muscat is the palace waterfront and the two Portuguese forts, Al Jalali and Al Mirani. Visa

Citizens of the UK, the US, EU countries, Australia and Canada can enter Oman for up to 14 days without a visa and without an OMR 5 fee. You still need a passport with at least six months’ validity, a return or onward ticket, a hotel booking and travel insurance. Stays longer than 14 days need a visa from the Royal Oman Police e-visa service. Indian passport holders generally need that e-visa before travel, unless they already hold a valid visa or residence permit for the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, a Schengen country or a GCC state. GCC nationals do not need a visa. Check the current list before you fly. The exemption is the Royal Oman Police’s rule, not a hotel’s.

Best season

October to April. December to February is the easiest weather: Muscat daytime temperatures often sit around 24–28°C. Wadi Shab is swimmable through that season. Jebel Akhdar can fall to single figures at night in January, so a layer belongs in the car. June to September is workable for a city morning. Wadi and mountain days become hard work after 10 AM.
