The 5-Day Oman Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1 — Muscat City Tour
Highlights: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Al Alam Palace, Mutrah Souq, Corniche
Start at the Grand Mosque. It opens to non-Muslim visitors Saturday through Thursday, 8 AM to 11 AM only. Arrive at 8:30 AM to beat the crowds and see it in the best morning light. The main prayer hall contains one of the world's largest hand-woven Persian carpets — 4,000 square metres. The chandelier weighs over 8 tonnes. Allow 90 minutes.
From the mosque, drive to Old Muscat — Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial royal residence, flanked by Forts Mirani and Jalali. Both forts date from the Portuguese occupation in the 16th century. You cannot enter the palace but the forecourt and surrounding area are open.
Afternoon: Mutrah Souq. The old port market sells frankincense, silver, Omani coffee, and traditional crafts in covered alleys that have operated for centuries. Walk the Corniche afterward as the city cools. The harbour light at dusk is worth the extra hour.

Day 2 — Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole
Highlights: Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Shab canyon hike, hidden waterfall cave
Depart Muscat at 7:00 AM. The drive south on Highway 17 takes 90 minutes.
First stop: Bimmah Sinkhole — a turquoise natural swimming hole formed by limestone collapse. It takes 45 minutes and is perfect for a morning swim before the canyon.
Wadi Shab: take the one-minute boat crossing (1 OMR per person), then hike 45 minutes through a limestone canyon. The trail ends at a pool — the only way forward is swimming. Push through a narrow rock crack in the canyon wall and you emerge into a cavern with a waterfall dropping 20 metres from an opening in the ceiling.
This is the experience most visitors cite as the highlight of their entire Oman trip.
Return to Muscat by late afternoon. Overnight in Muscat or continue south to Sur.

Day 3 — Nizwa Fort and the Historical Interior
Highlights: Birkat Al Mouz oasis, Nizwa Fort, Nizwa Souq, Bahla Fort option
Drive southwest from Muscat to Nizwa — 165 kilometres, approximately 90 minutes on Highway 15.
Stop at Birkat Al Mouz, 10 kilometres before Nizwa. One of the largest date palm oases in Oman, with an abandoned adobe village above it accessible on foot. Most visitors drive past this. It is worth 30 minutes.
Nizwa Fort: built in the 17th century, the circular tower is the largest fort in Oman. The base diameter is 40 metres. Inside: cannons, a water trap system designed to flood the lower levels during invasion, and exhibits on Omani military history. Climb to the roof for views over the palm gardens and mountains. Allow 90 minutes.
Nizwa Souq beside the fort sells silver jewellery, khanjar daggers, frankincense, and dates. On Friday mornings, a livestock market runs from 7 AM to 11 AM — one of the most authentic experiences in Oman.
Optional afternoon addition: Bahla Fort (UNESCO, 45 minutes west) and Jabreen Castle (10 minutes from Bahla).

Day 4 — Jebel Akhdar Green Mountain
Highlights: 4WD ascent, Diana's Point, Saiq Plateau, rose gardens, canyon views
4WD is mandatory. There is a checkpoint on the ascent road that turns back standard cars. Your vehicle is equipped.
The drive from Nizwa to the Jebel Akhdar plateau takes approximately one hour. The road climbs 2,000 metres above sea level. Temperature drops 15°C from the valley below.
Diana's Point: named after Princess Diana's 1986 visit, this viewpoint provides panoramic views across Wadi Ghul — a canyon that drops 1,000 metres and stretches further than you can see in either direction. One of the most dramatic views in Arabia.
The Saiq Plateau: terraced villages carved into cliff faces, rose and pomegranate orchards at altitude, and a pace of life that has changed very little in several hundred years. In March and April, the rose harvest fills the air with fragrance.
The Three Village Walk (W6 trail): a 4-kilometre walking trail along the canyon rim with views down to the valley 2,000 metres below.
Overnight on the mountain. The stars at this altitude, away from city light pollution, are extraordinary.

Day 5 — Wahiba Sands Desert and Return to Muscat

Drive from Jebel Akhdar to Wahiba Sands via Nizwa — approximately 3 hours total.
The Wahiba Sands cover 12,500 square kilometres of classic erg desert. Dunes reach 100 metres high. The sand colour shifts from pale gold at midday to deep copper at sunset.
Afternoon arrival allows time for dune driving, a climb to a high dune for the sunset view, and the transition from desert heat to desert cold as the sun drops. The temperature change at sunset in the desert is one of those physical experiences that photographs cannot convey.
If your schedule allows an overnight stay in the desert, this is the most recommended addition to a 5-day itinerary. Bedouin camp dinner, sleeping under open desert sky, and sunrise from the dunes make this the memory most visitors take home.
Return to Muscat: approximately 3 hours from Wahiba Sands along the inland highway. Arrive in time for an evening flight or a final night in the city.

Best Time for This Itinerary
October to April — ideal for all five days. Temperatures range from 20°C to 32°C at sea level. Jebel Akhdar will be cool (10–18°C) — bring layers.
March and April — rose season at Jebel Akhdar. The gardens are at their best.
May to September — avoid for Day 2 (Wadi Shab) and Day 5 (desert) due to extreme heat. Jebel Akhdar remains manageable year-round.
