A private taxi from Muscat to Dubai costs OMR 110 per vehicle — not per person. The drive takes 4 to 4.5 hours via the Hatta border crossing. Most Western passport holders get an Oman exit stamp and UAE entry stamp at the same border in under 30 minutes on a quiet weekday.
The road journey is approximately 450 km. The exact distance can vary depending on the pickup point, drop-off point, selected route, and border crossing. The highways are well-maintained throughout.
The first section runs northwest from Muscat on Highway 1, then Highway 21 toward the UAE border at Al Wajajah/Hatta. The road is flat, well-signed, and largely empty outside of rush hours. Your driver handles all vehicle documentation at both checkpoints.
The official crossing is Al Wajajah on the Oman side, known as Hatta on the UAE side. It operates 24 hours.
Process:
If you need a UAE visa, this is not the place to get one — UAE visas must be arranged in advance. If you need an Oman visa for the return journey, visa on arrival is available at this crossing for most Western passport holders (OMR 5 fee).
Typical border wait times:
From the border, the drive to central Dubai takes approximately 90 minutes on UAE highways. Traffic in Dubai can add 30-60 minutes during peak hours (7-9 AM and 5-8 PM on weekdays).

The Dubai to Muscat flight takes one hour. Why drive?
Cost for groups: Four passengers flying return Dubai-Muscat costs approximately AED 800-1,200 in flights plus airport transfers on both sides. A private car transfer costs OMR 110 total for all four — often cheaper overall.
No airport logistics: No check-in queue, no baggage allowance restrictions, no security, no baggage claim. You leave from your door and arrive at your destination.
Flexibility: The car stops when you want. Bimmah Sinkhole, a coffee break, a view stop — none of these are possible on a one-hour flight.
Luggage: No restrictions. Bring as much as you need.
The journey itself: The coastal section of Highway 17 south of Muscat and the mountain approach to Hatta are genuinely scenic. Most people flying never see them.
For Oman: Most Western passport holders (UK, US, EU, Australia) get visa on arrival at Muscat Airport and at the Hatta land border. Cost: OMR 5.
For UAE: Most Western passport holders get visa on arrival at UAE airports and land borders. GCC nationals do not need a visa for either country.
Indian passport holders: Check current requirements before travel — e-visa may be required for both countries.
Your passport (valid for at least 6 months) is the only document required. Your driver handles all vehicle documentation at both border checkpoints.
